Quartet For The End of Time

Projection of a young man's face on a reflective sculpture illuminated with green light, with a dark background.
  • In a prisoner-of-war camp during the early days of World War II, French composer Olivier Messiaen (1908–1992) created his chamber music masterpiece Quatuor pour la fin du temps (Quartet for the End of Time). Rooted in his deeply Christian faith, it is inspired by the New Testament Book of Revelation.

  • Set in the amphitheatre at Waterperry Gardens, lighting was chosen to amplify the grand composition of the architecture and the treeline behind. At the peak of the musical crescendo we aimed spotlights at ‘Gabriel’ a revolving dichroic sculpture which cast raucous colourful fragments of light over the audience to represent the angel announcing the end of world as envisioned by Messiaen as he was composing.
